ASSHAT of the week #4:Pat Roberstson

The poll numbers are in and this weeks ASSHAT award goes to TV preacher Pat Robertson. I criticized Robertson earlier this week for his ridiculous and insensitive remarks toward the people of Haiti. This type of behavior is quite common for Robertson as I will attempt to demonstrate in this article.

Robertson started his career after receiving guidance from a Dutch missionary. He later became and ordained minister at the Southern Baptist convention. Around this time Robertson bought a small UHF station and founded the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN). in 1966 the station started airing Robertsons Eponymous "700 Club", a program which is sadly, still on the air today.

Robertson also ran an unsuccessful run for the presidency in 1988(Thank you Jesus.)After which he returned to doing television programming for CBN and hasn't tried his hands in politics again(his uncomfortable appearances on political news programs not withstanding.)

So why is Pat Robertson an ASSHAT you might ask? Well let me tell you a little more about Pat and his penchant for saying incredibly stupid things. Robertson was once a Faith Healer(he loses points just for that)and once criticized protestant denominations as harboring the spirit of the Antichrist. He also believes he can deflect hurricanes with prayer.(Let me know how that works out for you Pat). He has ties to Charles Taylor and Mobutu Sese Seko. Both of these men have been internationally criticized for their human rights violations.

Pat doesn't stop there. He loves to rail against people for just being people. He once said that Ariel Sharons ill health was a punishment from God, called for the assassination of Hugo Chavez and this indictment of EVERYBODY in an excerpt from Robertson profile on Wikipedia.

The week of September 11th, 2001, Robertson discussed the terror attacks with Jerry Falwell, who said that "the ACLU has to take a lot of blame for this" in addition to "the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays, and the lesbians [who have] helped [the terror attacks of September 11th] happen." Robertson promptly replied, "I totally concur."[48] Both evangelists later issued apologies for their statements.[49]

He continued his"Immense Stupidity Tour" a few years later when he said Hurrican Katrina is retribution from God for America's Abortion policies. Robertson also likes to make predictions about 'End of Days' type events that he says he receives in visions from God. So far he's not had a great track record. Robertson opened his moronic mouth again in the wake of the Haitian earthquake that caused immense devastation to the country and the death toll which is still climbing could by well above 100,000 by the time it is all over.

Robertson on his television program made a claim that Haitians made a pact with the devil to be free of the French and have been cursed ever since.
PAT ROBERTSON: And, you know, Kristi, something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, "We will serve you if you will get us free from the French." True story. And so, the devil said, "OK, it's a deal."

And they kicked the French out. You know, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other. Desperately poor. That island of Hispaniola is one island. It's cut down the middle. On the one side is Haiti; on the other side is the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, et cetera. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to God. And out of this tragedy, I'm optimistic something good may come. But right now, we're helping the suffering people, and the suffering is unimaginable.

Now there is no truth to this claim at all. According to this article in wikipedia which I believe Robertson might have been deriving his information from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutty_Boukman.
According to the story Boukman sacrificed a pig as a symbol of freedom and than told the Haitian people to revolt. There was never any mention of the devil at all.  Wow Pat, thanks for being a complete douchebag. You are the reason that so many people hate Christians in this country.
